Blog of the Year 2012: A VERY HAPPY Classic Movie Fan and a VERY SPECIAL Award!

Wow! A VERY SPECIAL AWARD…

I can’t even begin to express how genuinely honored I am (and how “giddy happy” I feel) about being Once Upon a Screen‘s pick for Blog of the Year! (understatement!)

Blog of the Year Award 1 star jpegI have to say that from ‘Day One’, Aurora at Once Upon a Screen has just been marvelous to me! She warmly welcomed me into the Classic Movie Blogging Community when I first started out last year. And I will never forget that she invited me to participate in a Cinementals article which opened the doors for me to contribute to The Cinementals and ‘meet’ other wonderful Classic Movie Bloggers. She also nominated me for a Liebster Award a few months ago, which is yet another honor among Classic Movie Bloggers. In a nutshell, Aurora has been one of my greatest advocates ever since I launched Classic Movie Hub! That said, I truly appreciate everything that Aurora has done to support my blog, my website, my twitter — and all of my efforts!

I also want to add that Once Upon a Screen is without-a-doubt one of my favorite Classic Movie Blogs; Aurora is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the Classics — and is a wonderfully entertaining and interesting blogger. And, if that’s not enough, Aurora has two other wonderful blogs:  Citizen Screen and How Sweet It Was.

So — a BIG THANK YOU to Aurora 🙂

As with any Award, there are rules, which I’ve posted below. And, as I didn’t see any official deadline for the 2012 picks, I am presenting my picks now for The 2012 Blog of the Year Award (even though we are a few days into 2013).

That said, I would like to present The 2012 Blog of the Year Award to the following five blogs for their consistently entertaining and interesting blogs, packed with wonderful pictures, information and classic movie insight! I could go on and on explaining how wonderful their blogs are, but instead, I would strongly recommend that you give them a read; I know that you will not be disappointed! 🙂

1) Once Upon a Screen

2) The Motion Pictures

3) The Great Katharine Hepburn

4) Journeys in Classic Film

5) Virtual Virago

Note: I do want to add here that, all of the Classic Movie Bloggers on CMH’s BlogHub are truly wonderful, and ALL are worth a read. So, although I couldn’t nominate all 35 BlogHubbers, please check out the ‘Hub’ when you have a chance!

The Rules:

  1. Select another blog or other blogs who deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award;
  2. Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award;
  3. Include a link back to the page that noted yours as “Blog of the Year” and provide these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)
  4. Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them
  5. You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience
  6. As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

There are stars to collect! Yes, there are stars to collect!

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

When you begin you will receive the 1 star award, and every time you are given the award by another blog, you can add another star! There are total of 6 stars to collect.

You can check out your favorite blogs, and even if they have already been given the award by someone else, you can still award them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

Mini Tribute: Ray Bolger

Born January 10, 1904 Song-and-Dance Man Ray Bolger!

Ray Bolger started out as a vaudeville dancer in the 1920s, moving on to starring Broadway roles in the 1930s, then signing a film contract with MGM in 1936. Although Bolger appeared in over 30 film and TV roles, he is undoubtedly best remembered (and quite beloved) for his role as The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz!

I had the THRILL of seeing The Scarecrow’s Hat and Boots at The Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History over the summer.  I actually just stood there, mesmerized, staring at the iconic hat and boots! 🙂

Classic Movie Legend Tribute: Paul Henreid

Happy Birthday to Classic Movie Legend, Paul Henreid, born January 10, 1908!

For me, one of the factors that creates the “Classic Hollywood Mythos” is its time period. With an evolution that ranges in time from the Roaring Twenties, to the Great Depression and World War II, ending in the last days of Pax Americana, old Hollywood had a roster of interesting stars including Birthday Boy Paul Henreid.

Paul Henreid

Paul Henreid was born in a well-to-do family in the now defunct Austria-Hungary. However, by the time he graduated from the Maria Theresa Academy in 1927, the money had dried up and he was forced to work as a book designer and put his dreams of being an actor on hold, opting to take acting class at night to keep his day job. After four years in the publishing business, he finally made his stage debut under the direction of Max Reinhardt. He would eventually flee Austria-Hungary due to the post-civil war government installation of Austrofascism as he was vehemently anti-fascist.  Landing in Great Britain in 1935, he was able to start a film career, landing a prized role in the Sam Wood picture, Goodbye, Mr. Chips. From there, he would go on to be a major player in the Hollywood industry.

For me, knowing his background and his political leanings in fascist-torn Europe, it makes the characters he played a little more interesting with a bit more depth. I mean, think about — the man who played Victor Lazlo, a man so honorable that HE gets the girl instead of Humphrey Bogart, fled his motherland because of his disdain for fascism. It almost makes you think: what if Paul Henreid wanted to be a revolutionary instead of an actor? Too bad we’ll never know.
