I have many favorite comediennes from the silent era, but Marion Davies is a special favorite — particularly in Show People and The Patsy — because seeing her best work came as such a pleasant surprise. Before I was able to view these films I’d encountered some negative feedback about her abilities, so it was a revelation to discover how gifted she was, and how funny she could be. In retrospect, I think the bad-mouthing came from people reacting to Davies’ unconventional private life. Who knows if they’d even SEEN her films? P.S. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

My grandmother was an actress at Essanay Studio in 1917 and 1918. Her name was Lyda Dalzell (misspelled as Lydia). I would love to see a photo or the films she was in. My grandmother passed away in 1974 when I was 10 yrs old. I always heard Wallace Beery had a crush on her.

Hello, this Tom Chelimsky from the movie Charade, and I note that someone said my voice was dubbed by a French woman. Do you know how posted that and on what basis they made that assertion? That is definitely untrue. That is my voice in the movie. That was how I spoke English at the time. In fact one of the qualifications for the role was to speak English with a French accent, which was my natural speaking voice. FYI, years later, when I attended an American high school, I spent hours in the sound lab to eradicate that French accent because I hated being called a French frog.
