Classic Movie Legend Tribute: Judy Garland

Happy Birthday to Classic Movie Legend, Judy Garland, born June 10 in 1922!

Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, Love Finds Andy Hardy, Classic Movies

The one, the only Judy Garland (as ‘child’ actress) with Mickey Rooney.

“I sing, you know.” -Judy Garland as Betsy Booth in Love Finds Andy Hardy. (UNDERSTATEMENT!)

Garland and Rooney appeared in a total of ten feature films together.  Eight were specifically designed Garland/Rooney films: Thoroughbreds Don’t Cry (1937), Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938)Babes in Arms (1939)Andy Hardy Meets Debutante (1940), Strike Up the Band (1940), Life Begins for Andy Hardy (1941)Babes on Broadway (1941) and Girl Crazy (1943).  The other two films were Thousands Cheer (1943) where they both guest starred but did not appear together, and Words and Music (1948) where they shared one scene and one song together (“I Wish I Were in Love Again”).

Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas to Margaret O'Brien in Meet Me In St. Louis, Classic Movies, Vincente Minnelli

Judy Garland (as ‘young adult’) with Margaret O’Brien in Meet Me in St. Louis. This scene ‘gets me’ every time! It’s when poor Tootie (O’Brien) is crying because she’s upset that the family will be moving to New York in a few days. In an attempt to cheer up Tootie, her sister Esther (Garland) sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to her — however, as Garland delivers the most heart-wrenching version of the song, we soon realize that Esther is truly heart-broken also.  Such a magnificent performance by Judy Garland!  (one of many of course!)

Judy Garland, The Man That Got Away, A Star is Born, Classic Movies, George Cukor

Judy Garland (as ‘adult’) singing The Man That Got Away in A Star Is Born. Another mesmerizing performance!

Disclaimer: I know that I left out Judy Garland’s most famous film of all time in this blog post (The Wizard of Oz — of course), and I apologize for that — there were just too many great choices and it was very difficult to ultimately decide which ones to cover.
