  3. Mark PAGAN says:

I’ve seen only bits & pieces, so.. perfect means to remedy this deficit in my knowledge of cinema.

I’ve never seen it but I love Barbara & Walter, both!

And this IS Babs’ 2nd movie in her career.
And who was to know Michael Crawford wh0 did this movie WOULD be in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA? Another BIG BROADWAY HIT!

I love Hello Dolly because it is a romance, a comedy and a musical all rolled up in one. With talents as big as the ones in the movie the big screen is the place to see it. It doesn’t matter if you’ve seen it once or a million times, there is something about seeing it on the big screen that screams out…HELLO DOLLY!!! LOL And we all love Dolly

And who would have dream Michael Crawford would be Erik The Phantom on Broadway in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA?

  11. Lori Eber says:

For me, Hello, Dolly is a classic because of the amazing musical numbers, very theatrical! And all the actors are perfect in their roles! I’m a big fan of Barbra Streisand and any musical she’s in! Can’t wait to see this movie on the big screen!

  12. Farrell McNulty says:

I saw this about 30 years ago on a local station. While I like the title song, I don’t remember much about it except it was funny and it had Streisand and Matthau, two names that still draw my attention. As lavish as the movie looked on a 13-inch black and white tv set, I can only imagine full color, full screen, so I’d very much like to see it that way.

  13. Beth Senturia says:

Hello Dolly (film) is a classic because:
    1) songs (It Takes A Woman, Before The Parade Passes By, Elegance, Hello Dolly particularly)
    2) cast (Barbra, Walter, Tommy Tune?!?)
    3) costumes (OMG that sequined dress what??)
    4) bringing a Broadway classic to a wider audience
    5) lines (it’s a little lumpy but it rings; I shall be a ditch-digger a wonderful day)who once had

  14. Amanda Lupe says:

Babs & Matthau?!? How can that not be classic?!?

  15. Migdalia Pizarro says:

(2nd time I’m posting. First post was July 8 at 4:46pm. Took screen shot in case there was a problem. Tweeting as instructed, but note I advised you via twitter that link is missing on post above)

  16. Jorge Raub says:

Barbra Streisand and Louis Armstrong. That staircase scene – “Hello Dolly” AND “Before The Parade Passes By”. Iconic!

  17. Kathleen Bateman says:

When I was younger I spent hours and hours watching the film and listening to the cast album, and it would be a dream to see it on the big screen. Barbara seems to play this role so effortlessly. She is Dolly Levi, and that’s what makes it classic.

  18. Tony Normore says:

The film is a classic because it’s considered a “unique work of cinema that has transcended time and trends, with indefinable quality”. It’s a renown film of first rank that has become a part of American cultural folklore. With classic artists such as Streisand, Matthau, Tunes, Cocoa, Crawford, Lockin, McAndrew, Armstrong and Kelly- to name a few, how can it not be a classic? And those costumes (and hats) are winning elements.

  19. Reina says:

Hello Dolly is a classic because it’s one of the last lavish (to me the last) Hollywood musicals, directed by Gene Kelly; with legendary performers Barbara Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Tommy Tune, and Louis Armstrong; solid script; and great costumes! I’d love to see it on the big screen, the way it was meant to be seen. Thanks!

  20. Anthony Bejarano says:

Hello, Dolly! is a weird movie with such a special place in my heart.

At its worst, it’s kinda overwrought and feels way too long.

But more often it’s at its best, with Barbra Streisand and Michael Crawford. I know Streisand believes she was “miscast,” and in a pure, ‘who this role was written for’ sense, she is — but this is Barbra Streisand we’re talking about. She *owns* this performance and this role with every fiber of her being, just take a look at “Song Long, Dearie.” And Crawford? The underrated sweet heart of this film. “It Only Takes a Moment” is one of the most romantic moments (heh) in film history. It’s great.

And what I just said doesn’t even take account “Put On Your Sunday Clothes” and the title song — two numbers that showcase the grandeur and emotional resonance and pure joy of the entire genre of the movie musical.

And with regard to the latter… the idea that someone could watch Barbra Streisand and Louis Armstrong sing together 50 years after it happened is… magical.

That’s what movies are all about.

  21. I LOVE this musical! One of my favorites. Michael Crawford was amazing in it. Great songs. Funny. Timeless.

  22. Irene Potter says:

Barbara in her prime inhabits Dolly Levi as no other one can! We get to see her in glorious costumes singing the songs in her inimitable style with all of the charisma that makes her truly timeless. I have never seen the movie on the big screen but many times on the small screen. Would love to see it larger than life since you get to see all the smaller details that can be overlooked unless the film is up there larger than life. Thanks for the wonderful contest!
