MINI BIO:

Serious, slightly-built British leading man and offbeat character star who can play sneering or sensitive and has certainly mixed triumph with disaster in no uncertain fashion in a sporadic film career. At his best he can give very moving performances; his standing rose dramatically after his Oscar nomination for The Elephant Man, and his strained features were put through the mill in other demanding roles. Also nominated for an Oscar in Midnight Express, he now plays mainly cynical or corrupt character roles.
