Lean, straight-backed American actor, a leading man of silents with occasional forays into silky villainy. His slightly sinister personality became a concerned one as the sound years wore on, and he became totally identified with his running role as the wise paterfamilias, Judge Hardy, in the Andy Hardy series. Nominated for an Academy Award on The Patriot. Died from a heart attack when trying to chase vandals from his property.

Fought in the Spanish-American War (1898).

Fought in World War l (1917).

He had a Lifetime Contract with MGM and appears in the Guiness Book Of World Records as "Artist With The Longest Contract To One Studio." He signed with MGM in 1924 at the very start of MGM and remained with them as a contract player until his death in 1953. A total of 29 years.
