Chic, rosy-cheeked brunette American actress whose ladylike manner belied her name. She gave sophisticated performances in dozens of films and always looked most comfortable in smart suits and mink coats. Her best role was the photographer in The Philadelphia Story; it earned her an Oscar nomination.
