In the French-dubbed version a few characters were given Gallic names: Anna Magnani (Anne-Marie), Maria Michi (Monique Martin), Francesco Grandjaquet (François); Vito Annichiarico (Marcel), Carla Revere (Laurette), Nando Bruno (Augustin).
Rossellini used real Nazi POWs as extras for added realistic effect.
