The Road Runner's only vocabulary, "Beep, Beep!", was inspired by background artist Paul Julian who would make the sound while rushing down the hallways of the animator's offices. For this short, the sound effect was produced by Treg Brown who used an electronic horn called a Klaxon. When the gadget disappeared, Mel Blanc mimicked the sound for the second Road Runner short Beep, Beep. That sound effect became the standard for all Road Runner cartoons thereafter.
While the Coyote and Roadrunner are chasing each other through a freeway cloverleaf, the soundtrack plays "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover".
There was a gap of nearly three years between this and the second Road Runner cartoon, Beep, Beep. Chuck Jones only intended it to be a one-shot cartoon, but the reception given by the public made him change his mind. He was especially persuaded by a letter from a captain in the Naval Air Force, who claimed that pilots were imitating the Road Runner's "beep beep" call while doing maneuvers.
