According to crime author Rachel Pergament, this is the movie that brothers Eric and Lyle Menendez were watching on TV when they conceived the idea of murdering their father, producer and entrepreneur Jose Menendez, and their mother, Kitty Menendez. As with their crime, central figure Joe Hunt was convicted of killing the father of one of his business associates, and, like the Menendez brothers, he was ultimately sentenced to life without parole.
In 2003, BBC leader, Joe Hunt filed a habeus corpus petition in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to challenge his life sentence without possibility of parole. The Court upheld the sentence.
