This light-haired American lady of the theatre was perhaps unfortunate, as far as her cinema career was concerned, to have the tag "great actress" pinned on her from the start. Following her stage successes in the works of Tennessee Williams, she tended to be cast as fading southern belles, although eight Oscar nominations (before she finally won the award for The Trip to Bountiful) testify to the depth of feeling that went into her work.
