Sweet-faced, tousle-haired, petite American actress and occasional singer - a big star in simple, sentimental, romantic stories of the late 1920s and early 1930s, when she presented a portrait of the ragged-skirted optimist in the midst of the Depression that endeared her to millions. Her image inevitably dated quickly, but it remains a potent one. Married to (Gilbert) Adrian, the MGM costume designer, from 1939 to his death in 1959 (second of three). Oscar as best actress 1927 (the first) for 7th Heaven/Sunrise/Street Angel. Never fully recovered from a bad car crash in 1982. Died from pneumonia. Also Oscar-nominated for A Star is Born.
