Brown-haired, chubby-cheeked American singer who played bright-eyed young hopefuls opposite Doris Day in some sparkling family musicals during a five-year Warner contract, then won the leading roles in two big musicals from stage successes. Left films for nightclub work when the demand for musicals vanished. At one time an alcoholic, MacRae became Chairman of the National Council of Alcoholism three years before his death from cancer of the mouth and jaw.
