American actor, often seen as truculent policemen, exasperated editors or bamboozled store managers. Born in Brooklyn, he was a teenage singer in vaudeville, before coming to Hollywood to make silent comedies. He made his career in the theatre for more than 20 years after 1917, until the re-creation of his part as the hotel manager in Room Service, in the Marx Brothers' film version of the stage play, brought him back to film for a trip that lasted 15 years.
