Long-faced and pale-eyed, Otto Kruger was the most civilized and courteous of actors. He was almost entirely a stage star until his late forties, when he came to the screen to play lawyers, lovers, doctors, politicians both crooked and straight and, in the end, kindly uncles. Even his villains were always immaculately dressed and that deep, metallic voice exuded class. He died on his 89th birthday following a stroke.
