MINI BIO:

Cigar-puffing, dark-haired American comedian with wryly poker face and caustic wit, usually the victim of wife and long-time partner Gracie Allen's (they married in 1926 and she died in 1964) harebrained ideas. As a pair, they were more successful in radio and films in the 1930s, and television in the 1950s. Burns started a whole new career when he returned to films as a veteran vaudevillian in The Sunshine Boys at 79, and won an Academy Award, soon becoming something of a national institution. Even a force to be reckoned with in comedy in his eighties, he died soon after passing his 100th birthday.

George Burns Facts
Pictured with wife Gracie Allen on a 44¢ USA commemorative postage stamp, issued 11 August 2009, in the Early TV Memories issue honoring "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" (1950).

In the movie 18 Again! (1988) Burns' character celebrates his 81st birthday, although Burns himself was already 92 years old.

He and Gracie Allen continued to play single, even years after they were married; declining ratings prompted George to "update" the act on-air. He said later, "We were the only couple on radio who got married because we had to".
