MINI BIO:
American dancer with snub nose, dark, wavy hair and light, pleasant speaking/singing voice. A vigorous hoofer with years of Broadway experience before coming to Hollywood, he soon settled down in films around the top of the second rank of stars. Played a few tough-guy roles after World War II, but left the movies in 1952 for a political career on the Republican side (Congressman for California from 1965 to 1969). Special Oscar 1950. He was honored with one star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of Motion Pictures. George Murphy's handprints and footprints were 'set in stone' at Grauman's Chinese Theater during imprint ceremony #111 on Nov 8, 1954. Murphy was never nominated for an Academy Award. However he won one Honorary Award in 1950 for his services in interpreting the film industry to the country at large .
