Captain von Trapp: Maria, there isn't going to be any Baroness anymore.
Maria: I don't understand.
Captain von Trapp: Well, we called off our engagement, you see, and...
Maria: Oh, I'm sorry.
Captain von Trapp: Yes. You are?
Maria: Mm-hmm. You did?
Captain von Trapp: Yes. Well, you can't marry someone when you're in love with someone else... can you?

Captain von Trapp: You brought music back into the house. I had forgotten.

Angharad: Look now, you are king in the chapel. But I will be queen in my own kitchen.
Mr. Gruffydd: You will be queen wherever you walk.
Angharad: What does that mean?
Mr. Gruffydd: ...I should not have said it.
Angharad: Why?
Mr. Gruffydd: I have no right to speak to you so.
[he leaves]
Angharad: [stopping him] Mr. Gruffydd, if the right is mine to give, you have it.

Karen Holmes: If you're looking for the captain, he isn't here.
Sergeant Milton Warden: [eyes Karen coyly] And if I'm not looking for him?
Karen Holmes: He still isn't here.

Rick: I'm sorry for asking. I forgot we said "no questions".
Ilsa: Well, only one answer can take care of all our questions.
[She approaches his lips for a kiss]

Ilsa: A franc for your thoughts.
Rick: In America they'd bring only a penny, and, huh, I guess that's about all they're worth.
Ilsa: Well, I'm willing to be overcharged. Tell me.
Rick: Well, I was wondering...
Ilsa: Yes?
Rick: Why I'm so lucky. Why I should find you waiting for me to come along.
Ilsa: Why there is no other man in my life?
Rick: Uh-huh.
Ilsa: That's easy: there was. And he's dead.

Ilsa: I wasn't sure you were the same. Let's see, the last time we met...
Rick: Was La Belle Aurore.
Ilsa: How nice, you remembered. But of course, that was the day the Germans marched into Paris.
Rick: Not an easy day to forget.
Ilsa: No.
Rick: I remember every detail. The Germans wore gray, you wore blue.

[after they first meet, Custer walks Miss Bacon to Gen. Sheridan's house]
George Armstrong Custer: Do you think if I were to come strolling past your house around nine o'clock at night you might be just sitting around on the veranda?
Elizabeth Bacon: Life is full of surprises.
George Armstrong Custer: And if I did find you sitting on the porch perhaps you and I could go for a walk together.
Elizabeth Bacon: [laughs] We seem to have been walking together ever since we met.
George Armstrong Custer: Well, I can't imagine, ma'am - if I may say so - any pleasanter journey, ma'am, than walking through life with you beside me, ma'am.

Brad Allen: [on the phone pretending to be Rex] Am I gonna see you tonight?
Jan: I'd love to Rex, but I already have a date.
Brad Allen: Who with?
Jan: A client. You don't know him. Jonathan Forbes.
Brad Allen: Of course, you're not the kind of girl who would break a date.
Jan: No I'm not.
Brad Allen: And I ain't the kinda guy who'd ask you to.
Jan: I know you're not.
Brad Allen: I'll pick you up at 8.
Jan: I'll be ready.

Jerry Mulligan: What gets me is, I don't know anything about her. We manage to be together for a few moments and then off she goes. Sometimes we have a wonderful time together and other times it's no fun at all. But I got to be with her.
