Harold Lloyd

Harold Lloyd

In 1953, Lloyd received a special Academy Award for being a "master comedian and good citizen." The second citation was a snub to Chaplin, who at that point had fallen foul of McCarthyism and who had had his entry visa to the United States revoked. Regardless of the political overtones, Lloyd accepted the award in good spirit.

In 1994, Harold Lloyd was honored with his image on a United States postage stamp designed by caricaturist Al Hirschfeld.

In Peter Bogdanovich's 1972 comedy What's Up, Doc? the character of Dr. Howard Bannister (played by Ryan O'Neal) is in part modelled on Lloyd. The Howard Hawks comedy that inspired it, Bringing Up Baby, also featured a main character modeled after Lloyd, played by a bespectacled and flustered Cary Grant.

In the 1994 film, Dumb and Dumber, the two main characters' names are Harry and Lloyd.

In the opening scene of the 1985 film Back to the Future, amongst the plethora of clocks in "Doc" Brown's house, one featuring the tiny figure of Lloyd hanging from the hands can be seen, and Doc Brown himself ends up hanging from the hands of the Hill Valley clock tower by the end of the movie in an apparent homage to Lloyd's famous Safety Last! stunt.

Interred at Forest Lawn, Glendale, California, USA, in the Great Mausoleum, Begonia Corridor.

Lloyd was extremely superstitious. His daily routines were dictated by his superstitions: he maintained that certain streets were unlucky and his chauffeurs were instructed to avoid them. He would habitually enter and exit rooms from the same doors and dress and undress in precise reverse order.

Lloyd's Beverly Hills home, "Greenacres", was built in 1926–1929, with 44 rooms, 26 bathrooms, 12 fountains, 12 gardens, and a nine hole golf course. The estate left the possession of the Lloyd family in 1975, after a failed attempt to maintain it as a public museum. The grounds were subsequently subdivided, but the main house and the estate's principle gardens remain and are frequently used for civic fundraising events and as a filming location, appearing in films like Westworld and The Loved One. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lloyd's "Glasses character" was the inspiration for Superman's identity as Clark Kent. Like that character, Lloyd found that he could hide his identity simply by taking off the glasses.

One of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Parts of Westworld (1973) were shot at his estate, GreenAcres. He had expressed a desire to see his home preserved in some capacity related to his career, but his will strangely neglected any funding for the enormous estate. His heirs briefly opened it as a tourist attraction (and filming location) but this failed to generate adequate income and it was later sold.

Designed by caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, this set of stamps also honored Rudolph Valentino, Clara Bow, Charles Chaplin, Lon Chaney, John Gilbert, Zasu Pitts, Theda Bara, Buster Keaton, and Keystone Kops.

Son of J. Darcie 'Foxy' Lloyd and Elisabeth Fraser Lloyd.

The 2001 Futurama episode "That's Lobstertainment!" was a tribute to Harold Lloyd, featuring an alien version of him, named Harold Zoid.

The famous 'Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock' scene from "Safety Last" (1923), was filmed at the Brockman Building, located in downtown Los Angeles (530 W. 7th Street between Grand Avenue and Olive Street) a block south of the Biltmore Hotel.

Was immortalized in "Futurama" (1999) episode S03E08: That's Lobstertainment. In this episode we find out that Dr. Zoidberg has an uncle who was a silent actor, Harold Zoid.

Was once one of the 10 richest entertainers in the world.

While never credited as a writer through his entire career, Lloyd was in fact the driving force behind all of his movies, from Grandma's Boy (1922) throughout the silent era. He came up with most of the stories and gags and structured them together with his team.
