Rondo Hatton Overview:

Character actor, Rondo Hatton, was born on Apr 22, 1894 in Hagerstown, MD. Hatton died at the age of 51 on Feb 2, 1946 in Beverly Hills, CA .

MINI BIO:

Thanks to the congenital acromegaly that distorted his body and facial features, this American actor was unmistakable. It also confined him to playing villainous or horrific roles. But audiences were fascinated by him as a killer called The Creeper in several films, and in 1946, Universal spun an entire film around him, The Brute Man. In the same year, he was dead from a heart attack.

Rondo Hatton Facts
Rondo Hatton's appearance has endured far longer than even the best of his films. His likeness was the basis for the villain in The Rocketeer (1991). Also, in recent years, the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards, awarded each year for the best in horror research, appreciation and film restoration, uses his name and consists of a statuette based on the mammoth bust of Hatton as the Creeper, seen in Universal's House of Horrors (1946). More information about the "Rondos" can be found at www.rondoaward.com.

His autograph is considered highly scarce in the collector's market.

By all accounts a kind, sensitive man, sources differ on whether he was pragmatic or extremely unhappy at the way Universal exploited his disfigurement; but, as he was under contract, he could do nothing about it.
