Hopeful-looking, dark-haired and occasionally moustachioed, Robert Alda was a leading man who started at the top with his portrait of George Gershwin in Rhapsody in Blue. A good singer who became a rather stiff actor, he was offered few musical roles except on the stage. Later he made several films abroad, but never regained his star status in film. He is the father of actor Alan Alda.

Because of his parents' disdain towards his interest in an entertainment career, he initially took night courses at New York University majoring in architecture while working as a draftsman for an architectural firm during the day.
