Thanks to her earthly persona, she often portrayed stern working class women that could be seen as both forthright and querulous. Her two most striking film performances in were as the pathetic Mrs. Bramson in Night Must Fall  and the forceful Aunt in Stevie, for which she would go to gain a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA.
