MINI BIO:

British radio comedian who, after success in such post-war series as Merry-Go-Round, Waterlogged Spa, and Just Fancy, often in partnership with his wife Pearl Hackney, took on a whole new career at 44 as a film character comedian often playing busybodies or petty officials. Boulting Brothers comedies gave him a good start (he won a British Academy Award in their Brothers in Law) and he was a semi-regular in British films for the next 10 years. Catchphrase (and the title of his autobiography): "Steady, Barker!"

Father of Petronella Barker and grandfather of the actress and singer Abigail Hopkins.

The only actor in the "Carry On..." films to appear, along with Kenneth Williams and Kenneth Connor in the first (Carry on Sergeant (1958)) and last authentic "Carry On... films (Carry on Emmannuelle (1978)). This does not include the heavily criticised Carry on Columbus (1992).
