MINI BIO:

American actor in Hollywood films, cast as tough characters after long theatre training. His career really took off in the 1970s with his long-running TV portrait of hard-nosed, soft-hearted newspaper editor Lou Grant in a series of that name - a character he had created on another TV series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show. But his career received a severe setback in the early 1980s when, as militant president of the Screen Actors' Guild, he clashed slowly with President Reagan (himself a former president of the SAG). The Lou Grant series nosedived in the ratings and was promptly cancelled. In the early 1990s, looking much older, Asner was seen in some solid roles in TV movies.
