Louise Fletcher was an American actress of forthright manner. Born to deaf parents, she acted steadily in TV series during the late 1950s and early 1960s but retired in 1964, re-emerging 10 years later with two excellent film portrayals of treacherous, unsmiling women -- 'Mattie' in "Thieves Like Us" and 'Nurse Ratched' (Best Actress Oscar) in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest".
