Jackie Cooper Overview:

Legendary actor, Jackie Cooper, was born John Cooper Jr. on Sep 15, 1922 in Los Angeles, CA. Cooper died at the age of 88 on May 3, 2011 in Santa Monica, CA and was laid to rest in n/a Cemetery.

EARLY CAREER

Jackie Cooper started out as a child star in silent shorts in 1929, transitioning nicely into ‘sound' films, and later into adulthood roles and television producing/directing. At age 9 he was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his starring role in the film Skippy (1931), making him the first child actor ever to receive an Oscar nomination, as well as the youngest person to be nominated until Justin Henry was nominated at age 8 for Best Supporting Actor in Kramer vs. Kramer. As a child star, Cooper is probably best known as the character Jackie from the Our Gang shorts and episodes, as well as Wallace Beery's son Dink in the classic sports tearjerker, The Champ (1931).

TELEVISION CAREER

By the early 1950's, Cooper was gravitating towards television acting, appearing on various TV episodes, and in 1955 he starred as 'Sock' Miller in the television series The People's Choice (1955-1958) and later as Lt. Charles Hennesey USN in the series Hennesey (1959-1962). In the late 1950s Cooper also stepped behind the camera, working as a television director and producer for almost 30 years with credits totaling over 50 television shows, including episodes for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, MASH, The Rockford Files, Quincy and The White Shadow.

SUPERMAN

In 1978, at the age of 56, his film career was most famously revived when he played Daily Planet editor Perry White in Superman I starring Christopher Reeve, followed by Superman II, III and IV in 1980, 1983 and 1987 respectively.

Claimed in his autobiography that, while directing some of the first season episodes of "M*A*S*H" (1972), the only two actors there who weren't a pain to work with were Larry Linville and Wayne Rogers.
