MINI BIO:
Fresh-faced, personable dark-haired American western star with rich, slow-drawling voice, a former cowboy, rodeo champion (steer roping), and stunt rider. His career built up in John Ford westerns, but he didn't quite make it as a top star, reappearing in the 1960s as a leathery and weatherbeaten character star. The Academy Award that he won for his role in The Last Picture Show gained him a whole new series of varied and interesting roles. Died from a heart attack. Trooper Heinze: Yes, I did.
Sgt. Maj. Timothy Quincannon: And did ya mean it?
Trooper Heinze: Yes I did.
Sgt. Maj. Timothy Quincannon: [exasperated] A chuckle... what was that?
Trooper Daniel 'Sandy' Boone: Chuckle-headed Mick sergeant.
Sgt. Maj. Timothy Quincannon: And you meant it?
Trooper Heinze: Yes I did.
[Major Wharton's men massacre a band of Indians who approached his company under a flag of truce]
Maj. Wharton: Look at 'em, Captain - not the slightest attempt at rescue or revenge; slinking away like scared desert rats!
Capt. Thomas Thompson: More like foxes than rats. You can hardly blame them if they want to fight on their terms. After all, sir, didn't you?
Sgt. Maj. Timothy Quincannon: Did any of youse ever ride a horse?
Trooper Travis Tyree: Yeah, some.
