Although a life long non-smoker, it is believed that the lung cancer which took his life was caused by breathing second hand smoke in the clubs where he performed.

Four children: Norberto Castronuovo (aka "Daniel Castle") (born in 1965), Julia Castle (born in 1967), Antonia Castle (born in 1969) and Ben Castle (born in 1973).

His son, Ben Castle, is a very successful saxophonist.

Long time presenter of the BBC TV programme "Record Breakers", based on the Guinness Book of World Records, and holder of several tap-dancing records.

Was nominated for Broadway's 1966 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical) for "Pickwick."
