Debut in 1903 with the Belasco Stock Company in San Francisco. On Broadway from 1912 in 'The Talker'. Aside from her defining characterisation in 'Anna Christie', had other notable stage roles in 'Trelawney of the Wells' (1927), 'The Late Christopher Bean' (1932-33), and 'Ethan Frome' (1936). Toured with 'The Glass Menagerie' (as Amanda) in 1946.
