After he retired in 1993 at the age of 85 he began to suffer major health problems. Up to his death in 2000 he suffered several strokes, which took his eye sight and power of speech. In his last years he was confined to a wheelchair and completely lost his ability to communicate. He died peacefully in the hospital following an infection. He was 92 years old and surrounded by his wife and daughter.
