Her parents were Harvey T. Patten and Alma Miller who lived in Enid, Oklahoma until 1937. They moved to Long Beach, California to be near other family members.
While a student at Wilson High in Long Beach California in 1956, she was working as a box office cashier at the Lakewood Center Theater when it was held up. The movie playing was her first film, Song of the South (1946).
