Didn't decide to pursue a career in acting until he was 24. Conway worked as an IBM sales analyst prior to becoming an actor.
He studied drama at HB Studio in Greenwich Village in New York City.
Played Roger Chillingworth in a television production of "The Scarlet Letter" (1979), a role later played by Robert Duvall in The Scarlet Letter (1995). He and Duvall later appeared together in Gods and Generals (2003), and appeared in separate films in the Lonesome Dove series: "Lonesome Dove" (1989) and "Streets of Laredo" (1995).

Turned down the role of Theoden in The Lord of the Rings so he could reprise the role of Buster Kilrain in Gods and Generals (2003), and the role went to Bernard Hill instead. Had he accepted, he would have worked with Karl Urban, who played Woodrow call in "Comanche Moon" (2008), a prequel to "Streets of Laredo" (1995), in which Conway also appeared.
