He presented the BBC Radio 2 programme Thanks For The Memory at 7.00pm on Fridays for over 30 years, and usually sang a song.
He was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queens 2002 Birthday Honours list for his services to BBC Radio Broadcasting and to Songwriting.
He wrote the song, "Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner".
