Grew up in Bolton, Lancashire
In 1962 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company's experimental season at the Arts Theatre.
The son of a vicar.
Trained at RADA where he won the Bancroft Gold Medal (1954). He then gained a good grounding in the classics with the Old Vic Theatre company (1955-57).
