Sued to stop Gary Graver from auctioning Welles's original Oscar for "Citizen Kane" - believed to have been lost - then placed it for sale. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - which gave Beatrice a substitute statuette - sued to block its sale. A California court ruled that, since the agreement she signed with the Academy regarding the sale of the statuette pertained to the replacement only, she "has the unrestricted property rights in the original Oscar, which she may dispose of as she sees fit." Welles never joined the Academy. (March 2004).
