Commenting on his death, his agent Lynda Ronan said: "He was one of the most charming, witty, humorous people you could hope to meet. He spoke four languages and could make a brilliant joke in all of them."

He leaves a wife, actress Pauline Farr, a daughter and a grandchild.

He was born in Russia but moved to the UK as a child.

His grandmother was known as Babushka London, and had a house on Harley Street.

His great-grandmother was known as Babushka Claridges, because of the time she spent living there.

Launched his acting career after being invalided out of the RAF.

Spoke four languages.
