Attended The Skinners' School, Tunbridge Wells, UK.

Became an Associate Member of RADA.

Famous for his one-man stage show in which he recited the whole of St. Mark's Gospel.

Graduated from RADA.



He was awarded the 1982 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Portage of San Cristobal of AH.

Made a CBE (Commander Of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire ) in the 1985 New Years Honours List.

Was nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards three times: as Best Actor (Dramatic), in 1969 for "Hadrian VII," and in 1971 for "The Philanthropist;" and as Best Actor (Play), in 1979 for "St. Mark's Gospel."
