Pacer Burton: [as Pacer and Clint ride into town] You heard what pa said. No horsing around with Ros.
Clint Burton: Now, just a minute. What do you mean "horsing around"?
Pacer Burton: Well, ain't that what you're doing with her?
Clint Burton: No, it ain't.
Pacer Burton: You mean, you mean it?
Clint Burton: And what if I do?
Pacer Burton: With a gal that wears britches?
Clint Burton: What's wrong with a gal that wears britches?
Pacer Burton: Well, ain't nothing wrong, but, uh, on second thought, you might look pretty good with skirts on.

In May 1958 The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Nunnally Johnson had been slated to write, direct and produce the film. During the same month, Daily Variety wrote that Johnson wanted Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra to play the brothers. Eventually Johnson only worked as a writer on the film.
Barbara Steele walked off the picture after an argument with director Don Siegel. She was replaced by Barbara Eden.
The original paperback version of this novel by Clair Huffaker was entitled "Flaming Lance".
