Ruth Donnelly was a square-built, sharp-eyed, strong-chinned American actress. She was usually cast as ladies who dished out verbal witticisms to the discomfort of their menfolk, sometimes as dowagers who flirted with gigolos. She soon became the 'Thelma Ritter' of the middle-class bracket, but after the death of her husband in the late 1950's she left films and turned to song-writing.
