Actor, Robert Alda, was born Alphonso Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D'Abruzzo on Feb 26, 1914 in New York City, NY. Alda died at the age of 72 on May 3, 1986 in Los Angeles, CA .


Hopeful-looking, dark-haired and occasionally moustachioed, Robert Alda was a leading man who started at the top with his portrait of George Gershwin in Rhapsody in Blue. A good singer who became a rather stiff actor, he was offered few musical roles except on the stage. Later he made several films abroad, but never regained his star status in film. He is the father of actor Alan Alda.

First wife Joan Brown was a "Miss New York" beauty contest winner. She gave birth to their son Alan Alda, but shortly after began suffering from severe mental illness (undiagnosed schizophrenia).

Second wife was Italian actress Flora Marino. Together they produced son Antony Alda, who died in 2009.

Won the 1951 Tony Award (New York City) for Actor in a Musical for "Guys and Dolls".
