He was nominated for a 1975 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play for "Sweet Bird of Youth" at the Academy Festival Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.

According to his son, Chief Coroner Wally Nydorf on "Hill Street Blues" (1981) was Corley's favorite role. It even garnered him praise from Laurence Olivier, who personally phoned Corley to tell him that "that's the finest television acting I have ever witnessed".
