Malaya-born actor of unwavering gaze, in British films from 1947: He moved from dark, sensitive, intense young men in the 1940s to more outright villains, and then along the Peter Cushing trail to leading roles in horror films, mostly as scientists whose creations got the better of them. In smaller roles beginning at the end of the 1960s, notably as Michael Keaton/Val Kilmer's man-servant in the Batman films.

Won Broadway's 1979 Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for "Bedroom Farce." He was also nominated in the same category in 1988 for "Breaking the Code."

Father, with Diana Graves, of Simon Gough.

In addition to having played Aflred in both of Tim Burton's Batman films, he also worked with Burton on several other films: Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005), and Alice in Wonderland (2010). In this regard he is not unlike his successor, Michael Caine, who worked with Christopher Nolan on both the Batman films and The Prestige (2006) and Inception (2010).
