John has one daughter, Rollin Tyson Lupton, from his first marriage. His daughter gave him twin grandchildren: Parker Tod and Holly Tod.

He was married to Dian Friml [1935-2005], who was the granddaughter of music composer Rudolf Friml, who wrote the operetta, "Vagabond King", and "The Three Musketeers". He also composed "Indian Love Call" from "Rose Marie", and the "Donkey Serenade" from the film The Firefly (1937).
