American actor who played gullible sorts or inept woman chasers, with the occasional wisecracking friend on the side. Not really discovered by Hollywood until into his forties, when his mournful features found their way into several classic comedies. But the qualities of the roles offered fell away, and he returned to his first love, the stage.
