Basil Dickey claimed to have helped his brother in law Charles W. Goddard with the screenplay.

The ten chapter novel the film is based on by Arthur B. Reeve was published serially in newspapers while the film was playing in theaters. When published in the papers, the novel was called chapters 15 through 24 of "The Exploits of Elaine". Several entire chapters were deleted when it was later published in book form. The remainder of the text appeared as chapters 1 through 5 of the book titled "The Romance of Elaine".
