Open-faced Irish character player with dark, crinkly hair, often seen as figures of some authority, who came to British films after winning attention both as a variety star and a straight actor at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. He had one or two minor leading roles in the early 1950s, a decade in which he seemed to be turning up in every third British film. He returned to Ireland in the mid 1960s.
