Halliwell Hobbes Overview:

Character actor, Halliwell Hobbes, was born Herbert Halliwell Hobbes on Nov 16, 1877 in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. Hobbes died at the age of 84 on Feb 20, 1962 in Santa Monica, CA .

MINI BIO:

Halliwell Hobbes' strong features and powerful build were belied by a soft voice and gentle manner. Hobbes began his career in 1898 on the London stage, but made no films until the sound era in Hollywood (having come to America in 1923). Cast as a butler in one of his earliest films, "Grumpy," he very soon became one of film's most solid and reliable manservants, most prominently in "The Masquerader". He also had a keen sense of comedy, used to best advantage as the eccentric 'DePinna' in "You Can't Take It With You". He died from a heart attack.
