Red Dust Overview:

Red Dust (1932) was a Drama - Romance Film directed by Victor Fleming and produced by Hunt Stromberg and Irving Thalberg.

SYNOPSIS

The second pairing of Gable and Harlow is a steamy potboiler set on an equally steamy Indochina rubber plantation. Plantation foreman Gable first woos wisecracking prostitute Harlow when she arrives by ship, then takes up with the wife of an engineer (Astor) after he puts Harlow on a steamer. When Harlow returns and wants Gable back, Astor flies into a murderously jealous rage. Tragedy struck the set when Harlow's husband, studio executive Paul Bern, committed suicide during production. MGM considered a substitute, but the public demanded to see Harlow on-screen. Remade as Mogambo, again with Gable, in 1953.

Whether it’s apocryphal or not the term “Mogambo” is purported to be the Swahili word for “passion,” although it’s difficult to know if this was only hearsay propagated by westerners (now including myself). Regardless, it boasts an intriguing if altogether curious... Read full article

By Andrew Wickliffe on Mar 1, 2019 From The Stop Button

I?m not sure how much would be different about Red Dust if the film weren?t so hideously racist, particularly when it comes to poor Willie Fung (as the houseboy), but at least it wouldn?t go out on such a nasty note. Especially since the finale, despite being contrived, at least plays to the film?s ... Read full article

Facts about

After the suicide of her husband Paul Bern, which occurred during filming, most of Jean Harlow's scenes were re-shot, with higher neck-lines on her dresses.
During filming of the famous rainbarrel sequence, Jean Harlow reportedly stood up - topless - and called out something along the lines of "one for the boys in the lab!" Director Victor Fleming quickly removed the film from the camera to prevent any footage from reaching the black market.
"The Screen Guild Theater" broadcast a 30 minute radio adaptation of the movie on October 6, 1940 with Clark Gable reprising his film role.
