The film was based on the autobiography I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang written by Robert Elliott Burns at the & Serial Story, True Detective Mysteries Magazine Jan 1932 1932.
SYNOPSIS
Groundbreaking docudrama with hard-hitting performance by Muni as a victim of a legal injustice. When WWI vet Muni tramps the country, he finds a place on a Georgia chain gang after befriending a stick-up man. After escaping, he becomes hardened by life on the run. Based on Robert E. Burns's autobiographical story, this is a still-powerful portrait of the little guy battling injustice, and an insight into Depression-era America.
