Review: Duck Soup (1933)

By 4 Star Film Fan on Oct 20, 2018 From 4 Star Films

Up until this point in time, The Marx Brother’s all-out assault on humanity had still mostly been geared at the likes of stuffy socialites, gangsters, college campuses, authority figures, etc. Albeit entertaining but fairly straightforward worlds where there was not that much to be navigated b... Duck Soup (1933, Leo McCarey)

By Andrew Wickliffe on May 29, 2017 From The Stop Button

Duck Soup is madness. It?s not divine madness or sublime madness. It?s comedic madness, which is fine, but it?s a tad frantic and a tad distracted. The film opens with Margaret Dumont?s wealthy widow getting Groucho Marx installed as a head of state. Turns out evil Louis Calhern?a neighboring countr... Read full article

Facts about

Although this is usually considered the finest film The Marx Brothers ever made, it was not a hit when first released. In fact, the film performed so poorly at the box office that Paramount, then in serious financial straits, terminated its contract with The Marx Brothers, who then promptly signed with MGM where they produced two of their classic films, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races under the aegis of the legendary Irving Thalberg.
Shortly before this film premiered, the city of Fredonia, New York, complained about the use of its name with an additional "e". The Marx Brothers' response was, "Change the name of your town, it's hurting our picture."
An early draft of the script introduces Freedonia's new dictator Rufus T. Firefly as an agent for an ammunition company, which led to lots of ammunition-salesman jokes and intertwined with the movie's war theme.
